Prescription diet pills are diet pills prescribed by the doctor for people who are highly obese. They are very effective in inducing weight loss, but their intake is supervised because, they can have side effects.

There are many types of prescription diet pills. One common prescription diet pill is Phentermine diet pills (also known as Adipex-P or Fastin). These pills work by mimicking brain neurotransmitters so that the brain gets the message that the body is full. Other prescription diet pills, which work similar to Phentermine are Sibutramine, Meridia and Tenuate.

Diet pills also work by blocking fat stored in the body. An example of a prescription diet pill which works in this way is Xenial. When a person takes these pills the fat content in the food they eat is not absorbed by the body. However, taking such pills gives side effects such as diarrhea and stomach aches, so doctors advise to cut back on fat consumption when taking them.

Drugs which were developed for use against depression and epilepsy show properties of inducing weight loss. Prozac and Topomax are examples of psychiatric drugs now prescribed as diet pills. When taking diet pills, go on regular health check-ups in order to diet safely without endangering your health.
