Ephedra is an herb that’s used in Chinese traditional medicine. The Chinese have used it for over four thousand years to treat problems such as joint symptoms, asthma, bronchitis, inability to perspire, swelling, cough with difficulty breathing, and pain in the bones. Ephedra is boiled with other herbs such as cinnamon twig, licorice root, and almond, to make a traditional formula that treats cold.
In the western world, Ephedra is used in the preparation of conventional medicines. In Germany, it is used as an ingredient in medicines that treat repository problems. The World Health Organization (WHO), has found Ephedra to be used in medicines which treat health problems such as common cold, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, hay fever, and as a bronchodilator in treatment of bronchial asthma. The effectiveness of using Ephedra in such problems is supported by clinical findings. In the United States, under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), Ephedra is used as an ingredient in diet supplements.
Though Ephedra has such medicinal properties, it has been banned by the FDA. Reason, it affects the nervous system and people taking Ephedra-based diet pills face side effects such as sleeplessness, restlessness of muscles, increased heart rate, nausea, vomiting headache, irritability and problem in their urinary functions. If taken in higher dosage Ephedra can results in high blood pressure and cardiac rhythm disorders.
